5 Ways To Save Money On Fuel

Updated: Apr 18, 2023

As much as we love our cars, filling up the tank can feel like watching your hard-earned cash go up in smoke - especially when the cost of living ain't dropping.

But did you know, that there are five things that you can do that will help you save ave money on fuel without resorting to hitchhiking or riding a bike everywhere.

1. Get to know your vehicle

Before you can start saving money on fuel, you need to know what kind of fuel your car needs. Some vehicles require premium gas, while others are fine with regular unleaded. Check your owner's manual or ask your local mechanic to make sure you're filling up with the right stuff. Using the wrong type of fuel can actually reduce your car's fuel efficiency, which is like pouring money down the drain.

2. Keep your tyres properly inflated

Underinflated tyres can increase your car's fuel consumption by up to 3%. That might not sound like much, but over time it can add up. Check your tyre pressure regularly (at least once a month) and make sure they're inflated to the manufacturer's recommended level. It's also a good idea to get your tires rotated and balanced every 5,000 kms or so, as uneven wear can also affect fuel efficiency.

3. Don't be a lead foot

We get it, driving can be fun. But if you're constantly speeding up and slowing down, you're burning through fuel faster than you need to. Instead, try to maintain a consistent speed and avoid unnecessary idling. For example, if you're stuck in traffic or waiting for someone, turn off the engine instead of letting it idle. And if you're driving on the highway, use cruise control to maintain a steady speed.

4. Plan ahead

If you're running errands, try to plan your route in advance so you're not driving all over town. This will not only save you time, but also fuel. And if you're driving to a new location, consider using a GPS or mapping app to find the most direct route. Getting lost and having to backtrack can really take a toll on your gas tank.

5. Maintain your vehicle

A well-maintained car is a happy car (and a fuel-efficient one). Regular oil changes, air filter replacements, and tune-ups can all help keep your car running smoothly and reduce fuel consumption. Plus, catching any potential problems early can save you from more costly repairs down the road.

So there you have it, folks. With these tips in your arsenal, you'll be saving money on fuel and still cruising in style. Now, if only there was a way to save money on parking tickets...
